Tips for Safely Towing and RV

A successful RV vacation begins with a safe road trip. If you own a towable RV or camper, read on for some helpful towing tips!

Avoid Using Overdrive

Some drivers may be tempted to use the overdrive setting in their pickup trucks to reduce wear and tear as they’re hauling an RV.

While doing this will reduce noise and improve fuel consumption, towable RV manufacturers recommend that you don’t rely on this function, as the added weight of the trailer will strain your transmission. This can lead to overheating your transmission with repeated use.

The benefits of using overdrive do not outweigh the cost and risk associated with it. It is better to follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for hitching to preserve your vehicle and your hitching unit for long-term use.

Prepare For Mountains

Depending on where you travel, you may end up hauling your RV in high altitudes. If you have a gas truck, then its engine will lose about 4% of its power for every 1000 feet in elevation you scale, and if you have a diesel truck, this won’t be the case. For gas trucks, it’s important to try to make your RV as light as possible by doing away with supplies that you can pick up at your destination. You should also lower your truck’s gears when you climb steep inclines and go slowly.
